TOMORROW: AN INTERNAL AUDITOR'S DILEMMA
He was going to be all that an auditor could be...tomorrow;
None would be more polished or professional than he...tomorrow;
A serious finding needed reporting and merited it too,
a scandal, a waste, a management snafu.
He'd talk to his boss and see what he could do...tomorrow.
But management wanted it buried in paper and word,
"Forget it they told him or you'll be interred."
"We won't be embarrassed by scandal," he heard;
"Don't risk your career" they told him and then,
they convinced him it all would work out in the end.
"Too controversial to put in my report," he'd decide,
Maybe next time they'll give me more support," he sighed.
But each time he compromised, greater and greater,
and each time he figured he'd make up for it later;
The greatest of auditors this man would have been...tomorrow;
The world would have known him had he only seen...tomorrow;
But the fact is he feared for his job, and his family too,
He'd better play safe and nothing do...'til tomorrow;
The years rolled around, time really flew.
Tomorrow was here, it was time to be through;
And all that was left when retirement came true,
was a mountain of things he'd intended to do...
(Adapted from an an old poem "Tomorrow" original author unknown. Used in a presentation at the 60th International
Conference of the Institute of Internal Auditors held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, June 26, 2001)
When things go wrong, and they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but you mustn't quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When one might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You might succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup.
And he learned to late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the victor's crown.
Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the cloud of doubt,
And you can never tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar.
So stick to the fight when you are hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit!
Note: Authorship of this poem is disputed and basically unknown.
Whenever you find you

We have never observed
a great civilization with a population as old as the United States will have in the twenty-first century; we have never observed
a great civilization that is as secular as we are apparently going to become; and we have had only half a century of experience
with advanced welfare states...Charles Murray
